Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that Hungary will classify Antifa as a terrorist organisation, following the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Orbán told state radio, “Antifa is a terrorist organisation. The time has also come in Hungary for organisations like Antifa to be classified as terrorist organisations, following the American example.”
Trump declared Antifa a “major terrorist organisation” this week, describing it as a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster.” Critics note Antifa is not a structured group, but a decentralised movement, making the legal impact of such a designation unclear.
Orbán referenced a 2023 case in Budapest, when Italian activist Ilaria Salis was arrested during clashes at a far-right event. Salis, now an MEP, was released in 2024.
Antifa is a loosely organised anti-fascist movement. Supporters say it confronts far-right groups, while critics accuse it of violence, property damage, and undermining democratic norms.
