Brazil has formally joined South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The ICJ confirmed Brazil invoked Article 63 of its statute, allowing UN member states to intervene when treaty interpretation is at stake. Brazil argued Israel is in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
• South Africa and Israel have been invited to submit written observations on Brazil’s intervention.
• Brazil’s foreign ministry said its move reflects concern over “impunity” and breaches of international law.
• Brazil joins Spain, Ireland, Mexico, Türkiye and others backing South Africa’s case.

The ICJ issued an interim ruling in January 2024 ordering Israel to prevent acts of genocide and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. A final verdict may take years.
