Hundreds of anti-government protesters clashed with police in Lima on Saturday (Sep. 20), as discontent grows in Peru over corruption, organised crime, and a new pension reform.

The demonstration, led by the youth group Generation Z, saw stones and sticks thrown at officers, who responded with tear gas. At least three police officers were injured, according to authorities. Media outlet Exitosa reported two of its journalists were struck by pellets.

Protesters criticised both President Dina Boluarte, whose approval ratings remain low, and the conservative-majority Congress, widely viewed as corrupt.

• Anger has risen over a law requiring young adults to join private pension funds.

• Many Peruvians cite rising extortion and organised crime as worsening national instability.

• Demonstrators attempted to march towards government and congressional buildings.

Public trust in state institutions remains fragile, with opinion polls showing record levels of disapproval.
