French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed France’s recognition of a Palestinian state, joining the UK, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Macron said that “nothing justifies” Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, now approaching its second year.
He warned that failure to act could undermine the Camp David and Abraham Accords, urging leaders to support a two-state solution.
• Israel’s position: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected recognition, calling it a “reward to Hamas,” while far-right allies pressed for annexation of the West Bank.
• US response: The White House said recognition “does nothing to end the conflict.”
• Palestinian response: President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed recognition, reaffirming that Hamas “will have no role in governance.”
The Gaza war has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities.
