UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the world has entered an era of “reckless disruption and relentless human suffering” as he addressed world leaders at the 2025 UN General Assembly in New York.
In his opening speech, Guterres cited:
• Wars and invasions undermining sovereignty
• Hunger used as a weapon
• Censorship and silenced truth
• Cities devastated by conflict and divided societies
He urged an end to the war in Ukraine and highlighted the scale of destruction in Gaza, which he described as the worst he has witnessed during his tenure.
“The principles of the United Nations are under siege,” he said, warning that multilateralism is at risk.
Guterres’s remarks begin a week of speeches by global leaders, including Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump, who is expected to address challenges to the international order.
