Lithuania’s Defence Ministry has opened the first of nine planned schools to train both children and adults in drone use, assembly, and programming. The initiative, based in Tauragė, just 20 km from Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave, reflects growing security concerns in the region.
Deputy Defence Minister Tomas Godliauskas said the programme aims to strengthen national defence capabilities amid tensions with Russia and Belarus. Instructor Mindaugas Tamošaitis noted that trainees will learn to operate First Person View (FPV), quadcopter, and single-wing drones.
• Courses include virtual flight training and practical exercises.
• Participants range from children as young as 10 to adults.
The move follows incidents in which Russian drones crossed into Lithuania earlier this year. NATO has since announced plans to bolster its eastern flank, days after Poland shot down drones that violated its airspace during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
