Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday (Sep. 24), blaming the United States and Israel for undermining peace efforts and calling for renewed diplomacy ahead of the imminent reinstatement of sanctions.

• Pezeshkian’s speech is his first at a global forum since the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict in June, which saw the deaths of senior Iranian leaders.

• The president described the attacks as a violation of international law and criticised the E3 (France, Germany, UK) for “bad faith” in nuclear negotiations.

• Tehran seeks last-minute talks with Europe to prevent U.N. sanctions snapback, scheduled for Sunday unless an agreement is reached.

• Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ruled out direct nuclear talks with the U.S., rejecting Western demands on uranium enrichment and inspections.

Iran maintains its nuclear programme is peaceful, though Western nations and the IAEA previously assessed it had weapons ambitions until 2003.
