Typhoon Ragasa, the strongest tropical cyclone of 2025, made landfall in Yangjiang, southern China, on Wednesday (Sep. 24), after killing 17 people in Taiwan and bringing Hong Kong to a standstill.
The storm is now moving towards Maoming, a major oil refining hub in Guangdong province.
Impact:
• Over 2 million people evacuated in Guangdong.
• Storm surges up to 2.8 metres forecast; roads and low-lying areas at risk.
• Hong Kong reported 90 injuries; 50 shelters opened for 885 residents.
• Macau casinos temporarily closed for safety.
Experts warn that climate change could increase the intensity of future typhoons in southern China. The Pearl River Delta is highly prepared, drawing on lessons from Typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018).
Authorities continue monitoring flooding and wind damage across the region.
