North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has instructed senior officials to reinforce the country’s nuclear capabilities, describing them as the “shield and sword” of national defence.
At a meeting with nuclear scientists and technicians, including Hong Sung-mu, a senior figure in Pyongyang’s nuclear programme, Kim emphasised that expanding nuclear material and weapons production remains a top priority, according to state media KCNA.

• He stressed that nuclear forces underpin the DPRK’s security and sovereignty.
The remarks came shortly after South Korea’s Unification Minister, Chung Dong-young, said Pyongyang is believed to hold around 2,000kg of highly-enriched uranium—enough for dozens of nuclear warheads.
Chung argued sanctions alone will not dismantle North Korea’s programme, suggesting renewed US–DPRK dialogue may offer a path forward. Kim has signalled openness to talks if Washington drops demands for denuclearisation.
