The Taliban government in Afghanistan has enforced a nationwide shutdown of telecommunications, following weeks of disrupted fibre-optic connections. Internet watchdog NetBlocks confirmed a “total internet blackout”.

• Kabul airport flights cancelled or delayed
• Risks to banking and e-commerce services across the country
A Taliban official said services would remain suspended “until further notice”. The authorities have not given an official explanation, though NetBlocks linked the move to new “morality measures”.
Local media, including Tolo News, warned of interruptions to radio and television broadcasting. Residents reported connections cutting out around 17:00 local time.
Since retaking power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed restrictions under their interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, with connectivity controls now adding to wider restrictions.
