India and China will restart direct passenger flights this month, ending a suspension of more than five years. The announcement was confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday (Oct. 2). – India and China resume direct flights
• IndiGo, India’s largest airline, will operate daily services between Kolkata and Guangzhou from 26 October.
• A new New Delhi–China route is also planned.
Direct connections had been suspended since 2020, despite China being India’s largest bilateral trade partner.
The move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China last month for a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, his first in seven years. During talks, Modi and President Xi Jinping stressed that the two nations were “development partners, not rivals.”
Modi raised India’s trade deficit with China, now at $99.2 billion, while underlining the importance of peace along the disputed border, where tensions have persisted since a deadly clash in 2020.
