Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), has suspended all campaign activities ahead of the October 29 Dutch election after being flagged as a potential target by a terrorist group.
• The Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) informed Wilders that the group, which also targeted Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever, had mentioned him.
• Belgian authorities said the suspects were planning a “jihadist-inspired terrorist attack targeting politicians.” Two arrests were made Thursday (Oct. 9).
• Wilders cancelled a debate with other party leaders on Friday and was also due to appear in a televised debate Sunday.
Wilders, a so-called ‘anti-Islam populist’, has lived under heightened security for more than 20 years following Islamist death threats. He previously led his party to a wide victory but left government after one year, citing failure to implement tougher immigration policies.
