Russia’s Gazprom and the Government of Kazakhstan have signed a memorandum to build a new cross-border gas pipeline, strengthening bilateral energy ties and addressing Kazakhstan’s growing demand for natural gas.
The deal was reached between First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar and Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller during the 14th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum (SPIGF).
Key points:
• The planned Russia–Kazakhstan pipeline will transport up to 10 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas annually.
• It forms part of Russia’s federal transport plan, approved by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in February.
• Both sides also agreed on long-term gas processing at Russia’s Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, including upgrades to handle gas from Kazakhstan’s Karachaganak field.
Officials said the project aims to expand Kazakhstan’s northern gasification and support future exports to China, potentially reaching 45 bcm annually. The deal underscores deepening energy and infrastructure cooperation between the two neighbours.
Separately, KazMunayGas (KMG) and Russia’s Lukoil have begun developing the Kalamkas-Sea and Khazar fields on the Caspian Shelf, a joint venture estimated to hold 81 million tonnes of oil and 22 bcm of gas. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the $6 billion project will create over 2,000 jobs, further strengthening bilateral energy investment.
