Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed that a limited number of US military advisers will stay in Iraq beyond the planned September withdrawal, citing security developments in neighbouring Syria.

He said between 250 and 350 advisers would remain at the Ain al-Asad air base, coordinating with US forces at al-Tanf in Syria to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State (IS) group. Other American positions in Iraq are undergoing gradual reductions.

• Al-Sudani stressed that IS no longer poses a significant threat inside Iraq.

• He reiterated Iraq’s neutrality: “Iraq will not be a battlefield for conflicts.”

• The PM urged Washington to reopen dialogue with Iran, calling pressure policies “counterproductive.”

• Iraq’s parliament is also reviewing legislation to formalise ties between the army and Popular Mobilization Forces, despite US objections.

Al-Sudani, who faces elections next month, said armed factions transitioning into political entities “have the constitutional right to participate.”
