Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the United States of “fabricating a new war” after Washington deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, to the Caribbean.
The Pentagon said the deployment aims to combat drug trafficking, expanding US presence under US Southern Command, which covers Latin America and the Caribbean.
• US forces have conducted 10 air strikes on vessels since September, reportedly killing at least 43 people.
• US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said recent operations targeted the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal group labelled a terrorist organisation by the US.
• Donald Trump has accused Maduro of leading a drug-trafficking organisation and has not ruled out “land action” in Venezuela.
Regional experts, including Dr Christopher Sabatini of Chatham House, warn the escalation could be aimed at “regime change” rather than narcotics control, as Congress questions the legality of the strikes.
