Indian authorities have conducted a cloud-seeding experiment over New Delhi in an effort to clear the city’s persistent smog.
A plane sprayed chemicals into clouds over some areas of the Indian capital to encourage rain and wash pollutants from the air, which remained in the “very poor” category, according to air quality monitors.
Cloud seeding — a weather modification method that releases chemicals into clouds to trigger rain — has been used in drought-prone regions, such as the western United States and the United Arab Emirates, though experts say its effectiveness remains uncertain.
• The experiment was led by Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K).
• Further trials are planned in the coming days, with authorities expecting short rainfall spells.
• Experts remain sceptical about cloud seeding’s effectiveness, warning that improvements are often temporary.
New Delhi, home to over 30 million residents, remains the world’s most polluted capital, according to IQAir. Pollution spikes each winter due to crop burning, vehicle emissions, and industrial output, often exceeding 20 times the WHO’s safe limits.
Professor Krishna Achuta Rao of IIT Delhi said only strict emission laws can bring lasting change, calling cloud seeding “a show of action, not a solution.”
