Russian forces are nearing full control of Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, after a pincer movement left the city almost entirely surrounded. According to Russian military bloggers, small mobile units have already entered parts of the city.

• Pokrovsk, once home to 60,000 people, lies on a key supply route used by Ukrainian forces.

• Ukraine’s last coking coal mine, vital for its steel industry, sits nearby but was suspended by Metinvest earlier this year.

• Moscow seeks to capture the entirety of Donbas, which remains around 10% under Ukrainian control.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed “fierce fighting” and difficult logistics as Ukraine rushes reinforcements to defend the city.

If Pokrovsk falls, analysts say Moscow could advance toward Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, Ukraine’s last major strongholds in Donetsk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is prepared to temporarily halt combat operations in parts of eastern Ukraine to allow journalists to visit areas where Ukrainian troops are reportedly surrounded.

Speaking from the Central Military Clinical Hospital in Moscow, alongside Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, Putin said Russia could suspend operations for several hours in Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad and Kupyansk.

He stated that Ukrainian forces in “encirclement” should be given the chance to decide their fate and that Russia’s main priority was to avoid any “provocations.”

Putin added that Russia was ready to pause hostilities “for a few hours – two, three, or six – so that journalists can see what is happening, speak to Ukrainian servicemen, and leave.”
