Protests have continued across Tanzania following Wednesday’s (Oct. 29) disputed national election, with Amnesty International confirming at least two deaths.
The government has imposed a curfew, shut down the internet, and deployed the military to contain unrest in Dar es Salaam and other cities.
• President Samia Suluhu Hassan, of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), leads with 96.99% of early votes counted in 8 of 272 constituencies.
• Candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred from running.
• The European Parliament described the vote as “neither free nor fair”, urging international partners to defend democracy and human rights.
• Amnesty International called for an investigation into police conduct after reports of violence in border towns such as Namanga.
The curfew and roadblocks have disrupted daily life and cross-border trade. Ferry services to Zanzibar were also suspended amid continuing tensions.
