Labour migration to advanced economies dropped sharply in 2024, according to new data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The report found that permanent work-related migration to OECD states declined by 21% to 934,000, ending a post-pandemic rise. The fall preceded Donald Trump’s return to the White House, which has since further restricted inflows to the US.
• UK saw net immigration fall by over 40%, driven by tougher visa rules.
• Germany and the Netherlands also recorded declines below 2019 levels.
• International student visas dropped 13%, reflecting tighter policies across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
• Humanitarian and family migration rose, offsetting some of the overall decline.
Jean-Christophe Dumont, head of the OECD’s migration division, said Ukrainian refugees helped ease labour shortages, while migrants still maintained strong employment rates — notably 76% in the UK, higher than native-born workers.
