Japan has protested to China after Consul General Xue Jian made remarks Japan described as “extremely inappropriate” toward Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested Tokyo could respond militarily if Beijing attacked Taiwan.
In a post on X, Xue wrote: “We have no choice but to cut off that dirty neck that has lunged at us without a moment’s hesitation. Are you ready?” His post linked to a Japanese article referencing Takaichi’s remarks.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Xue made “multiple inappropriate statements” and that Japan has urged Beijing to act. U.S. Ambassador George Glass condemned the post as a threat to Takaichi and the Japanese people.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian defended Xue, calling Takaichi’s comments “wrongful and dangerous” and urging Tokyo to reflect on its “historical responsibilities.”
Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, later said her remarks were “hypothetical.”
