Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and his Reconstruction and Change coalition have emerged ahead in Iraq’s 2025 parliamentary election, securing 1.3 million votes, according to the Independent High Electoral Commission.
Al-Sudani welcomed the 56% turnout, calling it “clear evidence of another success” and a sign of renewed trust in the political system.
But the vote unfolded amid widespread frustration, with critics describing the election as favouring established parties. Turnout was notably lower in Baghdad and Najaf after Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of the Sadrist Movement, urged supporters to boycott what he called a “flawed election”.

• Shia, Sunni, and Kurdish candidates largely dominated their respective strongholds.
• KDP won the most seats in Nineveh, a majority-Sunni province.
• No Kurdish candidates won in Diyala for the first time since 2005.
• Coalition-building will again be required in Iraq’s 329-seat parliament.
