Lebanon plans to submit a formal complaint to the U.N. Security Council over Israel’s construction of a concrete barrier along the southern border, which Beirut says extends beyond the U.N.-demarcated Blue Line.
The Blue Line—drawn in 2000 following Israel’s withdrawal from south Lebanon—marks the separation between Lebanon, Israel, and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
A spokesperson for the U.N. Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said the works have rendered more than 4,000 square metres of Lebanese territory inaccessible. The Lebanese presidency called the construction “a violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701” and an infringement on national sovereignty.
Israel rejects the allegation. An IDF spokesperson said the barrier, initiated in 2022, is part of wider defensive measures expanded after the start of its conflict with Hamas.
“The wall is part of a broader IDF plan whose construction began in 2022,” the spokesperson said, referring to the Israel Defence Forces.
“Since the start of the war, and as part of lessons learned from it, the IDF has been advancing a series of measures, including reinforcing the physical barrier along the northern border.”
UNIFIL, which operates between the Litani River and the Blue Line with over 10,000 troops, has requested the wall’s removal.
