Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has said he is prepared to hold face-to-face talks with representatives of US President Donald Trump, as Washington increases pressure on Caracas.
Maduro made the comment after President Donald Trump said on Sunday (Nov. 16) that the United States may open talks with Maduro.
“We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll see how that turns out,” Trump told reporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, before getting on a flight back to Washington. “They would like to talk.”
On Monday (Nov. 17), questioned if he would speak to Maduro directly, Trump told reporters at the White House: “I probably would talk to him, yeah. I talk to everybody.”
Asked if he would rule out U.S. troops on the ground in the South American country, Trump said: “No, I don’t rule out that, I don’t rule out anything.”
Washington has long accused Maduro of leading the Cartel de los Soles, allegations he denies, arguing the US seeks control of Venezuela’s oil sector.
US pressure has intensified since Trump’s second term began, including a $50m reward for information leading to Maduro’s capture and the launch of a counternarcotics campaign that has resulted in more than 80 deaths during strikes on suspected vessels.
