Romania says NATO fighter jets were scrambled on Tuesday (Nov. 25) after a drone entered Romanian airspace near the border with Ukraine, in what Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu described as a “Russian provocation”. The drone travelled deeper inland than any previous incident since 2022.
“We are dealing with a new Russian provocation against Romania, a drone which the Romanian army and German Eurofighters have tried to shoot down,” Mosteanu said.
“My assumption is that (the pilots) analysed the potential collateral damage and … chose not to engage.”
Two German Eurofighters and later Romanian F-16s tracked the drone but did not fire, amid concern about collateral damage. Drone fragments without explosives were later recovered on Romanian territory.
