Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has declared a “nationwide security emergency” following a series of mass kidnappings across multiple states, with hundreds of schoolchildren and civilians abducted in recent days.
Tinubu said the government is deploying additional personnel to security-challenged regions and expanding recruitment into the Armed Forces and Nigeria Police Force.
Recent kidnappings include:
• 24 Muslim schoolgirls
• 38 worshippers
• Over 300 pupils and staff from a Catholic school
• 13 young women and girls near a farm
• 10 women and children
•Around 265 children and teachers taken from Niger state remain missing.
Tinubu also ordered the redeployment of police VIP bodyguards to frontline duties and approved hiring 50,000 new police recruits. Armed groups continue to operate across northwest and central Nigeria, where state presence is limited.
The president said intelligence units and new forest guards will move to “flush out terrorists and bandits”, vowing to continue efforts to rescue those still in captivity.
