The Venezuelan government has rejected heightened US pressure after US President Donald Trump declared that the airspace above and around Venezuela “is to be closed in its entirety”. Caracas called the comments a “colonialist threat”, arguing they violate international law and undermine Venezuelan sovereignty.
Trump on Saturday (Nov. 29), in a Truth Social post said: “To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.”
In its statement, the government said all migrant deportation flights to Venezuela were “unilaterally suspended” following Trump’s announcement. Deportation flights have been a major point of tension as the US continues its mass removal programme.
US military activity has increased in the region, including covert CIA operations, strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats, and preparations for possible land operations. The US Federal Aviation Administration recently warned airlines of a “potentially hazardous situation” due to heightened security risks.
President Nicolás Maduro has denied US allegations of drug trafficking and accused Washington of seeking to remove him from power.
