Uganda will receive up to $1.7bn in U.S. health funding over the next five years, becoming the latest African state to sign a partnership under President Donald Trump’s “America First Global Health Strategy.” Similar agreements were reached with Kenya and Rwanda in recent days.
Under the framework, Washington is shifting its foreign aid approach by requiring partner countries to take greater responsibility for combating infectious diseases and strengthening long-term self-reliance.
• The U.S. funding will target HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, and polio, according to the U.S. Embassy in Uganda.
• Uganda will raise its own health spending by $500m to increase domestic responsibility, the Finance Ministry said.
• Finance Minister Matia Kasaija said the collaboration aims to improve national health systems and workforce capacity.
