At least 10 people were killed and around a dozen injured after gunmen opened fire during a Jewish holiday event at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday (Dec. 14), Australian authorities confirmed.
New South Wales Police said two suspects were taken into custody, while ABC News reported that one of the attackers was among those killed. Around 12 people were taken to hospital, according to NSW Ambulance.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as “shocking and distressing”, saying emergency services were working to save lives.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Jewish attendees lighting the first candle of Hanukkah were attacked by “vile terrorists”.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the incident, linking it to rising antisemitism.
The attack follows a spike in antisemitic incidents in Australia since the Israel–Gaza war began in October 2023. Bondi Beach is one of Australia’s most crowded and iconic public spaces.
