The United Nations Security Council has unanimously condemned a renewed offensive by M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, calling on Rwanda to halt alleged support for the group and withdraw any troops from Congolese territory.
The Council also urged the Congolese government to end cooperation with armed groups, including the FDLR, and to fulfil commitments to neutralise them. The FDLR traces its origins to Hutu militants linked to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, while M23 claims it is defending ethnic Tutsi communities in eastern Congo.
The resolution comes shortly after Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame met Donald Trump in Washington to reaffirm support for a US-brokered peace initiative.
