New Zealand and India have concluded negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), announced on 22 December 2025, marking a significant expansion of their economic partnership.
India is a strategic priority for New Zealand due to its economic scale, regional influence, and growing middle class. Despite this, India is currently only New Zealand’s 12th-largest export market, with exports worth NZ$1.79 billion in the year to June 2025.
The FTA is designed to boost trade diversification, improve market access, and support New Zealand’s goal of doubling exports over the next decade.
Key outcomes include:
• 95% of current exports becoming tariff-free or receiving major tariff reductions.
• Average tariffs falling to 3% once fully phased in.
• Estimated tariff savings of NZ$43 million on day one, rising to NZ$62 million.
• Faster customs clearance — within 48 hours, or 24 hours for perishables.
• Improved access for services sectors including fintech, education, and professional services.
The agreement also includes a Treaty of Waitangi exception and commitments on cooperation across agriculture, technology, tourism, and cultural industries.
