Israel has formally recognised Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country to do so.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar signed a mutual declaration with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi on Friday (Dec. 26), confirming the move.
Netanyahu said the recognition was “in the spirit” of the Abraham Accords, and invited Abdullahi for an official visit to Jerusalem. Somaliland’s leader called the step “historic” and accepted the invitation.
Somaliland has operated as a de facto state since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, but had not previously received formal recognition from a major power.
