Mali and Burkina Faso have announced reciprocal travel bans on US nationals after US President Donald Trump extended US entry restrictions to citizens of both countries.
The measures were confirmed on Tuesday (Dec. 30) by the two governments’ foreign ministries, citing the principle of diplomatic reciprocity.
“In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation informs the national and international community that, with immediate effect, the Government of the Republic of Mali will apply the same conditions and requirements to US nationals as those imposed on Malian citizens,” the Malian ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.
The US restrictions, announced on 16 December, expanded an existing travel ban to 20 additional states, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all governed by military juntas that have withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
