Former MI6 Chief Sir John Sawers has raised concerns over the legal basis of the US operation that removed Nicolás Maduro, former President of Venezuela.
Speaking to Sky News’ Trevor Phillips, Sawers said the action would not have been considered lawful under UK or European legal standards, noting that Washington appears to rely on US domestic law enforcement powers rather than international self-defence provisions under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
He said the UK government has distanced itself from the operation without openly criticising it, reflecting legal unease among US allies.
Sawers warned the operation represents an assertion of “raw American power” and risks legitimising similar uses of force by other states, particularly in regions dominated by Russia or China.
