Israel and Syria have agreed during U.S.-mediated talks in Paris to set up a communication mechanism to coordinate on security, intelligence and commercial issues, according to a joint statement released by the U.S. State Department.
However, a Syrian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Damascus will not engage on “strategic files” without a binding timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal from Syrian territory seized after the December 2024 toppling of President Bashar al-Assad.
Syrian state media said the talks focused on reviving the 1974 Israel–Syria Disengagement Agreement, which created a UN-monitored buffer zone after the 1973 Middle East war.
After Assad was removed on 8 December 2024, Israeli forces advanced further into southern Syria, while Israel said it intervened to protect the Druze minority in the southwest. Syria is seeking a return to pre-December 2024 troop positions, alongside guarantees of sovereignty and non-interference.
The State Department said the new mechanism will operate under U.S. supervision to support intelligence coordination, military de-escalation, diplomatic engagement, and commercial contacts.
