North Korea has accused South Korea of sending surveillance drones into its airspace, calling the alleged flights a “serious violation of sovereignty” and warning of consequences.
The General Staff of the Korean People’s Army said it used electronic warfare systems to bring down a drone over a border town, claiming it carried cameras and filmed “major objects” inside North Korea. It also alleged a second incursion in late September.
“We strongly denounce the hooligans’ serial outrageous encroachment upon our sovereignty and undisguised provocative acts against us,” the North Korean statement said. “The ROK military warmongers will be surely forced to pay a dear price for their unpardonable hysteria.”
South Korea’s Ministry of National Defence denied the claims. Senior official Kim Hong-Cheol said Seoul did not operate drones at the times cited and does not possess the types described, adding authorities would check whether civilians were responsible.
The dispute complicates efforts by President Lee Jae Myung to revive dialogue with Pyongyang, which has rejected talks and declared a hostile “two-state” posture on the peninsula.
On Wednesday (Jan. 7) President Lee Jae Myung said he asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help ease tensions through mediation.
North Korea has avoided talks since Kim Jong Un’s diplomacy with Donald Trump collapsed in 2019 and has since focused on nuclear expansion and a hostile “two-state” doctrine.
Drone activity has become a recurring trigger for friction, with both Koreas accusing each other of airspace violations in recent years, including allegations over Pyongyang in 2024 and a cross-border incident in 2022 that prompted warning shots and fighter jet scrambles.
