The UK has allocated £200 million ($270 million) from its defence budget to prepare for the possible deployment of British troops to Ukraine as part of a future multinational stabilisation force.
The funding follows a declaration agreed this week by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at a summit of Ukraine’s allies on a potential post-ceasefire deployment.
Key developments:
• Funds will upgrade vehicles, communications, counter-drone systems and troop readiness, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.
• France has signalled it could send thousands of troops; the UK has not confirmed numbers.
• The force — the Multinational Force for Ukraine (MNFU) — aims to reinforce security guarantees for Kyiv.
• The announcement followed Russia’s launch of a hypersonic missile, viewed by European allies as intimidation.
The Ministry of Defence said the investment demonstrates the UK’s intent to help “secure the peace in Ukraine.” Britain will also begin producing Ukrainian-designed Octopus interceptor drones domestically and ship thousands to Ukraine each month.
