Myanmar has begun the second phase of a tightly controlled national election, with a military-backed party on course for a decisive victory as conflict and political repression continue.

The vote follows the 2021 coup, in which Senior General Min Aung Hlaing overthrew the civilian government and detained Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the dissolved National League for Democracy (NLD).

Key developments

• The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won 88% of contested lower-house seats in the first phase.

• Turnout in the initial round on 28 December 2025 was 52%, according to the military.

• The United Nations and Western governments say the vote is neither free nor fair due to the exclusion of opposition parties.

• Junta spokesperson Zaw Min Tun described the process as a “victory for the people.”

Residents report voting under social and political pressure, while armed opposition groups are boycotting the process.
