The United States has carried out new airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria under Operation Hawkeye Strike, authorised by US President Donald Trump in response to a deadly attack in Palmyra in December 2025.

US Central Command said the earlier ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continued counter-terrorism operations.

The strikes come as Syria faces renewed internal instability, with clashes in Aleppo between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Key developments:

• At least 22 people killed in fighting in Aleppo.

• Tens of thousands displaced from Kurdish neighbourhoods.

• A temporary ceasefire is reportedly unravelling.

• Integration of the SDF into state institutions remains stalled.

Analysts warn unresolved political and security tensions risk further violence despite US-led mediation.
