US President Donald Trump said the United States is considering “very strong options” in response to Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests, including the possibility of military action. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Iran’s leadership was starting to cross a US red line and warned that any attack on American interests or allies would be met with overwhelming force.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, warned that US bases, ships and Israel would be treated as “legitimate targets” in the event of a strike. Trump also said Iranian officials had sought to negotiate, but that Washington “may have to act before a meeting”.

Trump separately repeated his call for the US to acquire Greenland, citing concerns about Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic and arguing that American control was necessary for security.

He said, “one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland,” adding that he would prefer a deal but would not allow Russia or China to gain influence over the territory.

He also questioned the reliability of NATO, saying: “I just wonder whether or not if we needed NATO, would they be there for us? I’m not sure they would… If it affects NATO, then it affects NATO. They need us much more than we need them.”
