Bolivia’s government has reached an agreement with major labour and rural groups to end weeks of nationwide protests and road blockades triggered by a disputed economic decree.

President Rodrigo Paz’s administration signed the deal with the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB)  and other social organisations following talks in El Alto, near La Paz.

Key points:

• The government will fully repeal Supreme Decree 5503, which declared an economic emergency.

• The decree had moved to end fuel subsidies, driving petrol and diesel prices up by up to 160%.

• A joint commission will draft a new measure preserving subsidies while reviewing loan repayments, social benefits and wage policy.

• The Bolivian Road Administration reported at least 52 highway blockades, leaving passengers stranded and disrupting food and fuel supplies.

While most roads have reopened, some protests continue in parts of Cochabamba. Unions say they remain on alert until a new decree is formally issued.
