Tens of thousands of pro-government demonstrators gathered in Tehran as Iran’s leadership sought to project control amid continuing nationwide protests.

At Enqelab Square, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, accused the US and Israel of waging economic, psychological, military, and terrorist “wars” against Iran. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the rallies as a warning to Washington following statements by US President Donald Trump about possible intervention.

Key developments:

• Protests are in their 16th day, triggered by a sharp currency depreciation.

• Iran Human Rights reports at least 648 deaths, with higher estimates possible.

• An internet blackout has limited verification of events inside Iran.

Opposition figure Reza Pahlavi has called on security forces to defect, while protests and solidarity rallies continue both inside Iran and internationally.
