Military personnel from France, Germany and other European countries have begun arriving in Greenland as tensions rise over the Arctic island’s security and political future.
France has sent 15 soldiers from its mountain infantry unit, while Germany has deployed a 13-person reconnaissance team. Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are also participating.
The deployment follows talks in Washington between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States, which revealed what Danish officials described as a “fundamental disagreement” with President Donald Trump’s administration.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the American position on Greenland had not changed, while Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt rejected any suggestion that Greenland should be “owned” by another country.
