The United States warned that ‘all options are on the table’ as Washington and Tehran clashed at an emergency UN Security Council session on protests in Iran.

Speaking to the council, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said President Donald Trump was prepared to act to halt the killings, while signalling possible de-escalation as violence appeared to ease. Iran rejected the warning, with Gholamhossein Darzi, Tehran’s deputy UN ambassador, accusing Washington of fuelling unrest under a “humanitarian” pretext.

Key developments

• At least 2,677 deaths reported since late December, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

• New US sanctions announced against Iranian officials accused of ordering violence, including a senior national security figure.

• The G7 and EU said further sanctions are under consideration.

• European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc aims to strengthen pressure on Tehran.
