Britain’s main opposition leader joined hundreds of protests on Saturday (17 January) against plans for a new Chinese embassy in London, ahead of a government decision due this week.
Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Conservative Party, urged the Labour government to block the project, citing China’s record of sanctioning MPs and alleged harassment of UK-linked nationals. She spoke at a rally near the proposed site, joined by figures from several opposition parties.
The government is expected to decide by Tuesday whether to approve the development on the former Royal Mint site near Tower Bridge, which would become China’s largest embassy in Europe.
Key developments
• Proposed complex spans 20,000 square metres near London’s financial district
• Critics warn of espionage and intimidation risks
• MI5 has previously warned MPs of Chinese intelligence targeting
• Security services are understood to have approved the plans
