Syrian government forces have moved to reassert control over areas of Aleppo governorate previously held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), following an agreed withdrawal.

The Syrian Arab Army entered Deir Hafer, east of Aleppo, after SDF commander Mazloum Abdi confirmed redeployment east of the Euphrates under the March 10 integration framework.

Key developments

• Syrian forces declared full control of Deir Hafer and began mine-clearing.

• The SDF said the withdrawal reflects commitments to stalled integration talks.

• Recent clashes in Aleppo left at least 23 dead and displaced tens of thousands.

In a parallel political move, President Ahmed al‑Sharaa issued decrees recognising Kurdish as a national language, restoring citizenship to previously stateless Kurds, and declaring Nowruz a national holiday—steps welcomed cautiously by Kurdish authorities as an initial, but incomplete, measure.
