US President Donald Trump has said he may impose tariffs on countries that do not support the United States’ claim to control Greenland, escalating pressure on allies as diplomatic efforts continue in Europe.
“I may do that for Greenland, too,” Trump said. “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I may do that,” he said.
Danish officials rejected any suggestion of conflict. Major-General Soren Andersen, head of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command, said his focus remained on potential Russian activity in the Arctic, not the United States.
Key developments:
• European allies have deployed limited forces to Greenland ahead of the Arctic Endurance NATO exercise
• Denmark and Greenland held talks in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, agreeing to form a working group
• A bipartisan US congressional delegation led by Senator Chris Coons sought to ease tensions in Copenhagen
• Jeff Landry, Trump’s special envoy, plans to visit Greenland in March, saying a deal is possible
European leaders continue to insist that Greenland’s future can only be decided by Denmark and Greenland.
