US President Donald Trump said the United States will impose new tariffs on goods from eight European countries over opposition to US control of Greenland, escalating tensions over the strategic Arctic territory.
In a social media post, Trump said a 10% import tariff will take effect from 1 February 2026, rising to 25% on 1 June 2026 unless an agreement is reached for what he described as the “complete and total purchase” of Greenland. The measures would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.
The announcement coincided with protests in Nuuk, where hundreds of Greenlanders rallied in support of self-governance, rejecting any transfer of sovereignty. Similar demonstrations were reported elsewhere across the Danish realm.
The rallies followed visits by a bipartisan US congressional delegation to Copenhagen, which sought to reassure Denmark and Greenland amid growing diplomatic strain over Arctic security.
