UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer says US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on allies over Greenland is “completely wrong”, warning that “a trade war is in no one’s interest.”

Delivering remarks on Monday (19 January), Starmer responded after Trump threatened to hit the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland with additional 10% import tariffs from 1 February, with rates set to escalate later in the year unless a deal is reached over Greenland.

Starmer said the UK–US relationship remains a close alliance vital to security, prosperity, and stability. However, he stressed that alliances are built on respect and partnership, not economic pressure. He also rejected linking trade measures to Greenland security, arguing such actions would damage British workers, businesses, and the wider economy.
