Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party of Vietnam has opened its five-yearly national congress, where senior leaders are selected and economic priorities set for the next term.
To Lam, appointed general secretary in August 2024 following the death of his predecessor, is widely expected to retain the party’s most powerful post following a closed selection process. The 68-year-old has prioritised administrative reform, private-sector growth, and an ambitious push towards high-income status by 2045.
Key developments
• About 1,600 delegates will approve policy documents and elect a ~200-member Central Committee.
• The Politburo (17–19 members), including the general secretary, will then be chosen.
• The leadership is due to be announced on 25 January.
Economically, Vietnam aims for 10% growth in 2026, above its long-term average of over 6%. Despite US tariffs under Donald Trump—now 20% after earlier threats of 46%—exports to the US rose 28% to a record high. Sustaining foreign investment amid trade uncertainty is a central test for the new leadership.
