French President Emmanuel Macron warned at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos that the international system is entering a dangerous phase, marked by a “shift towards a world without rules, where international law is trampled underfoot.” He argued that growing instability, trade coercion, and the return of power politics are eroding collective governance and normalising confrontation.

Macron’s remarks come amid renewed strain in EU–US relations, as US President Donald Trump continues to use tariffs and trade leverage against European interests. In a recent Truth Social post, Trump published what appeared to be private messages from Emmanuel Macron, in which the French president expressed alignment on Syria and Iran, voiced uncertainty over Greenland, and proposed follow-up talks in Paris after the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The French president said Europe must respond more firmly, including by using its anti-coercion tools, while positioning the EU as a predictable, rules-based partner that prioritises stability, cooperation, and the rule of law over intimidation.
